Military Connected Students Honored with a Purple Up! Day
Staff and students understood the assignment - wear purple to honor our military connected students. The Month of the Military Child recognizes that military kids serve our country too, as part of a military family … not just in April, but all year long. These amazing kids face challenges and enjoy triumphs along the way, and while no military child’s journey is the same, they each have a through-line that connects them by experience, globally.
Highlighting the resilience and sacrifices of more than 1.6 million children in military families, this month of celebration was established in 1986. CSA has 10 students with immediate family members who are Active Duty, Reserves or in the National Guard. CSA proclaimed April 23 as Purple Up! day to honor the challenges children face, including frequent relocations and parental deployment. The color purple is used as it represents the combination of colors from all military branches (Army green, Marine red, and Coast Guard, Air Force, and Navy blue).
Students were honored with tshirts and a lunch just for them with pizza and brownies. The lunch allowed them a time to talk about the experiences they’ve each had, such as the many different locations some have lived, while others have only lived in Ohio. One student said California was his favorite place to live, while another shared he had lived in England for quite some time. Staff also showed visible support by wearing “We Support Military Kids” tshirts.
Recognizing the military children at our school helps our entire student body celebrate global perspectives, and nurture the connections that help build a strong community.
