Tailored Learning: What Does It Truly Mean?

The word tailored brings to mind a suit that fits as if it were sewn directly onto the body — something that stands apart, even from the most expensive garment that hasn’t been adjusted for the individual. The definition of tailor is “to make or adapt to suit a special need or purpose.” As designer Michael Kors once said, “A man in a well-tailored suit will always shine brighter than a guy in an off-the-rack suit.”

So what does that mean for CSA?
While we don’t offer a clothing design pathway (yet!), we frequently talk about our mission to tailor learning to each student — and that is not just lip service. Just like an off-the-rack suit doesn’t fit everyone perfectly, an off-the-rack education doesn’t always give each student the opportunity to shine their brightest. Our goal is to provide flexibility within the structure of state standards, allowing students to gain and demonstrate understanding in ways that help them truly absorb and retain information.

Tailoring learning can be as simple as offering a seating choice — the floor, a wobbly stool, or a standing desk. It can also be more complicated, like allowing a student to write a rap to show their understanding of cell structure, or re-organizing a schedule so a sixth-grade student can attend high school math lessons. These examples are just a few of the many individualized approaches we’ve already implemented at CSA. When a student is eager to learn and has an idea of what will help them succeed, we are eager to remove barriers and create opportunities for them to shine.

How does your student learn best? What experiences would you love to see them have on their learning journey? Reach out or stop by for a tour today. We may be able to provide the tailored educational experience you’ve been looking for.
